Constructed in 1774, the Five Rise Locks were designed by the renowned engineer John Longbotham. The purpose behind their creation was to facilitate the transportation of goods along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, which played a pivotal role in the industrial revolution of the 18th century. What sets the Five Rise Locks apart is its unique design, comprising five consecutive locks built in a staircase formation. This innovative design allows boats to traverse a height of 60 feet in a single operation, making it one of the steepest flights of locks in the world. The locks are manually operated by gate paddles, a reminder of the skilled craftsmanship of yesteryears and a reason to be thankful for automation.

Over the centuries, the Five Rise Locks have become more than just a functional part of the canal system. They have become a cultural icon, attracting tourists and enthusiasts from around the globe. Visitors are drawn not only to witness the locks in action but also to soak in the rich history and scenic beauty that surrounds them.

We are blessed in the Aire Valley with a rich, well maintained history. Despite the passage of time, the Five Rise Locks have stood the test of time, thanks to ongoing preservation efforts. Local authorities and heritage organizations work tirelessly to ensure that this engineering masterpiece remains intact for future generations to admire and appreciate.
